The Group’s commitment is based on achieving “Net Zero Emissions” by 2050 in line with the targets set out in the Paris Agreement.
Our reduction in Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions has achieved a significant 39% reduction in our Carbon Footprint in the last financial year.
This indicator has been calculated in scope 1 and 2, following the GHGProtocol standard, and with subsequent verification through the Bureau Veritas certification company. In 2022 our emissions were 31,058 tn CO2 equivalent, of which Frigorífics Costa Brava accounted for 15,821, Frescos Delisano for 2,013, Embutidos Monter for 9,381, Embutidos Collell for 2,938, Coopecarn for 859 and the head offices for 45 tn CO2 eq. respectively. For its part, the Group’s largest company, Frígorifics Costa Brava, S.A., has experienced a reduction of -40% in 2022 vs. 2021 in relation to the tonne of product marketed, and -35% in relation to its turnover.
Our energy is 100% renewable and our main facilities are equipped with photovoltaic panels, which continue to grow in number and self-generate energy.
New technologies and industrial robotisation, heat recovery systems, LED lighting, etc. reduce consumption and also contribute to achieving the “Energy Efficiency” objective.
With regard to gas, we have significantly reduced its use by recovering waste heat from the refrigeration installation for other industrial processes and by analysing and combating inefficiencies.
In terms of logistics, the fleet of lorries used by Grup Cañigueral is equipped with engines that comply with Euro VI and Euro VI C standards, the most efficient on the market in terms of fuel and CO2 management.
The trend in the reduction of water consumption in the Cañigueral Group has been constant in recent years.
As an example, the evolution of the water withdrawal trend of the largest company, Frigoríficos Costa Brava S.A., which has saved an accumulated -34% in relation to its turnover since 2018. The evolution has been as follows 2019 vs 18 -20%; 2020 vs 19 -2%; 2021 vs 20 +8%; 2022 vs 21 -22%.

We minimise waste generation (applying the 5Rs: Reduce, Reject, Recover, Reuse and Recycle) and increase recoverable waste.
The change of formats in raw and auxiliary materials, the review of frequent changes of gloves in the plant, the implementation of washable coveralls instead of single-use plastic coveralls, the collection of label support reels and cardboard waste in the outside aisles, have all helped to achieve these good results.
Costa Brava Mediterranean Foods has Zero Waste Certification, which guarantees that our plants and offices are aimed at reducing, recycling and reusing the waste that arises in the production processes to avoid a negative impact on the environment. The results of this policy far exceed the limit of 90% of waste managed for sustainable final destinations established by the Certification, reaching almost 94%.

At Costa Brava Mediterranean Foods we also adopt a commitment to the circular economy by reducing the consumption of plastics per kg of product, trying to encourage the consumption of recycled plastic in packaging, and increasing recyclable plastic for a new use.
In the period 2019-2025 we will reduce the total volume by 25% by redesigning packaging, and reducing micronage of trays and lidding films, or by trying to increase flat-skin packaging together with our customers (60% reduction of plastics in packaging).
Our products are now shipped with 70-92% recycled plastic and are moving towards mono-material packaging, which is easier to recycle.

We were pioneers in the production of cured chicken and turkey sausages in 2002, the healthiest on the market as they have 30% less fat. We are constantly evolving and striving to produce ever healthier products. Over the last two decades we have achieved numerous milestones to improve our products and their qualities. For example, our project without additives and without sulphites in 2013, our gran reserva Serrano ham, whose ingredients are only Mediterranean salt and the ham itself, or our sulphite-free fuets.
Our challenge is to achieve excellent products, adapted to market trends.
Costa Brava Mediterranean Foods fights against food waste with measures such as artificial vision to achieve 0 wastage, quadripack packaging for sausages (packaging used for the first time by the company, which contains the right dose for each serving, and prevents the deterioration of the opened product).
Our organisation is very dynamic, generating 4,000 jobs, and we have “CBMF & Family”, a social action group with teams at the different sites representing all departments and age groups. This group promotes and organises activities to integrate our people and promote team building.
We support initiatives to promote it, sponsoring the Integra Football of the Unió Esportiva Figueres for people with disabilities, or the Fundació Oncoliga, which aims to raise funds for research and improve the quality of life of cancer patients.
Likewise, for example, we sponsor the “Swimming for you” team that participates in the Oncoswim, a Mediterranean crossing organised to raise funds against cancer, or we participate in charity walks and races against stroke in Girona, organised by the Stroke Unit of the Dr. Josep Trueta University Hospital in Girona.
In teaching and research we are trustees of the Escuela Politécnica Superior de la Universitat de Girona, we collaborate with entities such as Florida Universitaria or the Escola Agrària de l’Empordà, we are involved in the training of young people through the Kreas Foundation for dual training, or the Foundation for Creativation, which aims to develop creativity in children through training itineraries in schools.
We apply social measures such as hiring vulnerable people and those at risk of social exclusion, even doubling the legal percentage where possible, which has earned us the Incorpora Award from La Caixa on three occasions (2021, 2016 and 2014).
The search for equality between men and women earned us the Spanish Government’s Distinction for Equality. The Equality Visa and the Fent Empresa seal of the Generalitat Valenciana, among other distinctions, accredit the fulfilment of these objectives.
And the Award for Excellence in Business Management reflects our commitment to occupational risk prevention.
We are partners of the Fundació Sèlvans, with which we preserve one of the oldest forests in Catalonia, of high ecological value and close to one of our industrial plants, in the volcanic area of La Garrotxa.
We continue to work with them to move forward with the project and to save more natural landscapes in danger of being cut down. Leer más detalles.
We have an Equality Plan in all our plants, as we perceive these plans as both a legal and moral duty, to show that we treat all workers equally, and that we emphasise equal treatment and opportunities to improve the working environment. The most important aspects dealt with in this theme are related to equal pay, integration, work-life balance and equality.
Costa Brava Mediterranean Foods adheres to the meat collective agreement in all its facilities (with the exception of those with their own, personalised agreement) and complies with all the requirements and parameters of these agreements.

Our experts audit that the animal is healthy, well fed and not thirsty, comfortable in its resting area, free from disease and pain and conveying a positive emotional state. This absence of negative feelings and stress is also a guarantee for the quality process of our products.
We are moving towards an integral control of livestock production, achieving more than 60% of our own pigs and 100% animal welfare certification for all pigs in the coming years, and we carry out regular audits on farms to check the correct functioning of the whole process.
